RE: Detail or not to detail...

Michael,

Loose drawings & loose specifications is a menu for a construction disaster.

"Let the contractor do what he wants with that." is the nail that will close
your project's coffin.

Single line, double line, it don't matter but always show clearly your intent. Unions, flanges,

Victaulic couplings or any other connectors have their own special uses. Be specific of the

type and locations where you wanted them. My guiding principle as a designer is service and maintenance.

I am a mechanical contractor and believe me when I tell you that I'll give you a solid welded

mile long run of sludge piping if I can get away with it.

A hundred dollar of sound engineering will translate to less headache and thousands of dollar savings in construction.

Hope this helps.

Ed

Subject: [PipingDesign] Detail or not to detail...

I need some opinions here. I seem to be coming across a lot of people in my group that are of the opinion that "Oh, we never show THAT, we let the contractor do what he wants with that."

I can see that being the case on some stuff, but I am constantly getting this comment seemingly about EVERYTHING.

"Oh, we never show unions."

"Oh, we never show Victaulic fittings, just show them as flanged."

"Anything 6" and under we show single-line and note it to be diagrammatic."

It really urks me, because there's a LOT of these "details" that are just as easy to show as it is to NOT show them.

I'm just afraid into getting into bad habits.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
