NAVIS is extremely difficult to liscense and even harder to change. We use it extensively and have learned from our mistakes. We had bought liscenses that were permanately installed on a particular computer. We have actually had to strip hard drives out and replace them from tower to tower and copy everything else off of the the original hard drive. We bought network liscenses which makes it easier at the office. Since AutoDesk has bought NAVIS, their liscensing may become easier. A few of us just finished BETA testing 2009, the first AutoDesk release. I have been told by our IT that the liscensing is much better.

All I really want is to be able to run software I've paid for on different computers (never on more than one computer at a time). Locking software to a hard drive serial number prevents this, and what happens if I buy a new computer/the drive crashes?

I purchased Navisworks JetStream ($1200+) over a year ago and installed it on my home machine. I later wanted to run it on my laptop for a trip to Seattle, so I had to contact NavisWorks to have them authorize the license for use on the laptop (so the program no longer works on the home desktop).

The laptop is a MacBook which has Windows XP installed on a partition via Parallels, and Jetstream installed on the partition. Somehow the partition got corrupted, so I can no longer access JetStream because the software is apparently locked to the hard drive.

A support ticket to NavisWorks has gone unanswered, so I'm not a happy camper.
