Anybody have any amusing stories from the field? Here's one example:
This is one I heard of a few years ago, and it was attributed to a specific individual. Today, I was reminded of it by a former colleague, but he heard a different story. I have to wonder if it's widespread.
There's no morality tale, really, just a funny story:
In large construction shops (like for airplanes, for example), there are overhead cranes to move heavy pieces of work around to the next staging area. The cranes are moved by a push-button (up/down/right/left) hand-held device that is tethered to the mechanical controller. This device is operated from the shop floor by a competent operator.
Our fearless junior engineer decides to go into the shop on a Sunday to look around and check out the fruits of his labour.
No one's there, so he decides to hook himself up to the crane via a hastily-assembled harness to get a "bigger picture" of the shop. So he gets hooked into this crane and has a great deal of fun zooming around, playing Superman.
Then he accidentally lets go of the crane controller device.
Monday morning, union shop guys get a great big laugh at/take pictures of strung-up "bozo smart-ass engineer".
